Canton now joins an elite group of 40 other cities in the state of Texas as it was named the 41st GO TEXAS Certified Retirement Community.
Texas Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples delivered a certificate that announced this special designation. “I extend my most sincere congratulations to the citizens and leaders of Canton for achieving this notable certification,” Staples said. “Not only do retirees have a significant economic impact on the regions in which they reside, but they also bring a wealth of knowledge and energy to community service, employment and business.”
“Team work is very important and it is a big thing,” Staples said. “The city of Canton is another element that helps make Texas become a state of distinction.
- Cost of Living - Texas has no state income tax making housing more affordable for retirees. The City of Canton, County and school districthave joined to freeze Senior 65 years old or older and/orDisabled citizen’s property taxes in addition to the homestead exemption allowable in Texas.
- The People - The volunteers, residents and others in the Canton area have a genuine interest in Canton always doing better. It is this sense of never accepting what you have but always wanting to be better that separates Canton from many other small communities.
- Safety – Canton has a low crime rate. The city police force works closely with local citizens through education to insure a safe community. Neighbors watch out for each other which is rare these days.
- Medical Facilities – Canton is in close proximity to Dallas and Tyler which houses state of the art medical facilities. Physicians at these hospitals are top in their fields, trained at the top hospitals in the country and have chosen to live and work in North East Texas. In November 2006, Trinity Mother Frances opened a 25,000 square-foot Direct Care facility offering a wide range of health care services to our residents. Trinity Mother Frances also built a new helipad station at the new facility for any emergency needs.
